Alienware Area-51m 7700 Review

Posted by Karel Donk on Sunday, June 5th, 2005

As promised my review of the Alienware Area-51m 7700 mobile computer is finally online. You can read the complete review here. It’s different compared to reviews you can usually find on hardware websites. There are no benchmarks, no graphs, no comparisons etc. It’s just about my experience with buying a mobile computer from Alienware and shows what you can expect from them.

I have the same laptop configured identically as you except I only got 1 GB RAM. Same drives, same video, etc. I have had the same expericence as you and extremely happy with every aspect of my alienware laptop until last week. I was playing a network game of C&C Generals: Zero Hour and 45 minutes into the game the screen went blank, the laptop powered off and thick smelly smoke began to rise from the keyboard. It stunk the house up so bad my wife had more of a fit over the way it made the house smell than the fact that this expensive piece of hardware I had talked her into was now nothing more than a paperweight.
Then began my experience with the tech support guys. The alienware guys I called at 9pm EST could barely speak english. I had to call back in an hour when my laptop cooled down, they said. Next guy who couldn’t speak clear english then had me start unscrewing things and taking things apart for them. I was up till 11:30pm satisfiying their instructions before I got an RMA and FedEx label to send it back. It was obvious to me at the start it was the power supply. It wouldn’t power on with or without AC adaptor, which made a sizzling noise when plugged in. Very dangerous, why are they making me do this. I didn’t want to get near it but they insisted I connect it. I then called back the next morning to talk to a guy who speaks clear english to make sure everything was straight and to get him to give me an RMA for the power adapter and battery which the previous guy told me not to send.
Their e-mails say it will come back with a blank hard drive, like a new laptop would come. Well of course I didn’t get a chance to back up anything. So I guess i’ll have to start HalfLife 2 all over again, but thats the least of my problems.

Thanks for your reply Ed, how long did you have your laptop?

  3. lol Says:

You fucking moron, ever heard of “BACKUPS” ? And did you know laptops are not “Real” PCs ? They die. They suck. Get a real PC and real backup and RAID your harddrives. This way, once your “CONSUMER QUALITY” hardware dies, you won’t bitch. :)….. OR get good SCSI drives, RAID them and lay back and enjoy the ride. They will hold atleast 5 years for you 24×7.

    Cheers!

Of course, mati. I do have to say, though, you really come accross as both mature and professional on this site.

  9. Karel Donk Says:

Thanks. I’m sure this is not what you’re used to of The Joker.

Your use of the sranan tongo dictionary, although a bit disturbing, is very good. Are you planning to visit with your class?

  10. yotsuya Says:

Didn’t you hear? I’ve been promoted.
